A rare cold open found the horrific Walder Frey toasting his men for all their awful work, an odd thing since he'd had his throat cut by Arya Stark at the end of last season. Seventy- five- year- old actor David Bradley must not have many opportunities to play a teenage girl. And he made the most of it with a rousing speech that revealed him to be Arya, who had poisoned the wine all the Frey men had consumed. That was your mistake. You should have ripped them all out, root and stem. Leave one wolf alive and the sheep are never safe. Rather than recap what happened - - something others have done longer and better like my friend, Therese, whose GOT writing is appointment reading for me - - I hope to hem closer to character as our field of players winnows. But these characters all have similar motivations just in different proportions. And it's interesting to see how the show's creators generate tension and conflict based on these varying codes, which all falls into something I typed about last week. Arya Stark: She's a puzzling one to me, and one that has the longest path yet to go. She's largely without country since her country, such that it is, turned on her family. Her death list might suggest family, as she systematically slays each person she feels wronged her family. But she's on a vengeance mission, and that's not something she'd have picked up from her father. She tells the dying Freys . Compared to the combative words of the Lannisters (. At least I think they are. But later in . Like so many other teens, she may have simply had her guard lowered by the musical stylings of guest star Ed Sheeran, who she didn't see fit to kill. Jon Snow: Country, family, god - - I think. He forgives other houses that fought against his family because he doesn't see the fight for the Iron Throne as the urgent imminent conflict. Cersei's raven note ordering him to King's Landing to bend the knee matters to him not a whit. He's concerned with shoring up defenses for the White Walkers, which we see as coming through Bran's eyes. And now they have zombified giants. Sansa Stark: She's had the roughest ride of just about any character. She bickers with Jon, whether out of strategy or a need for vengeance it's difficult to tell. She tells Jon she's . Self, family, god. Petyr Baelish: Self, self, self, self. He didn't do much this episode. Which is more terrifying than if he had done something. Jaime Lannister: Family, self. He visits Cersei as she's regarding a floor- sized map of Westeros, her domain as self- proclaimed the queen of seven kingdoms. His character has evolved a lot since we met him, and he's clearly not sure his sister is taking the smartest route to ruling. Yet so far, he's sticking around. But he's whacked a monarch for the good of the kingdom before. What it doesn't reveal is how long she's felt that way. She justified her actions early in the series as those of a protective mother. When Jaime calls her out on her dynastic aspirations - - on account of having no heirs and all - - she comes back with . And for her, it may have always been self. It's a pretty profound moment, as she runs her fingers over the dust covered Painted Table, depicting Westeros (her version of Cersei's map). To her family and country are virtually the same. With her forces, she's coiled for violent action. Though any number of possibilities could arise for alliances and solutions to conflict, her collision course with Cersei appears inevitable. There are plenty of others to type about, but I've run long. So I'll end with Sandor . He's asked for death, so self is off the table. That leaves him as this unlikeliest of faith characters, and he has both a profound moment of empathy for a family he robbed last season, who starved to death, and also a vision that comes to him in the fire. I thought he'd sit on the periphery this season until an inevitable demise. I no longer think that. I can't quite put my finger on the show- runners' take on faith. They've used it as a source of conflict, and they've made prophecy a hit- and- miss deal. People come to a new season wanting a jolt, and following Arya's laying waste to House Frey, the episode steered into a deep contemplative groove. So he's doing as Jon's bidding, working to find a solution for the problem in the north. He puts family first, just the new family he's cobbled together since his own Tarly family was undeserving of him. Euron Greyjoy made a rather unromantic proposal to Cersei. But he said he'd go get her a gift that would change her mind. My guess is he's planning to kidnap Tyrion. My favorite addition is Jim Broadbent as an archmaester, who mid- autopsy offers Sam a deep dive of information about the history of the kingdom. That winter is inevitable. It's like the USS Indianapolis speech from . And then years later it ends. I'm interested to see how profound that idea plays out, how much the winter takes away from Westeros. THAT, I believe, is important long term with this story. I've tried my best year after year to keep from making accusations of allegory, yet they keep creeping in like winter. A land full of people with different needs and wants, who rank the elements of their lives - - faith, family, country, self - - differently. Consistent conflict seems inevitable and perpetual. But as a young editorial assistant at the Spectra division of Bantam Books in the mid- 1. George R. R. Martin's editor, Dansby attained a unique distinction among all . Seven hundred book pages amounted to well over 1,0. That doesn't give him any particular insight into how the televised version of Martin's story will play out in its two final seasons. It's just proof that his love for Martin's story was more begrudgingly earned than yours. Amazon Digital Services LLCTrue Blood is an excellently written series. I have watched it since it began, and recently bought this dvd set for my nephew. It is nothing like the Twilight series, and in my experience, people who really love Twilight usually do not care for this series - again, simply because the two are nothing alike. Some of the main characters here (as well as supporting roles) are vampires, but that's not to say this is a show . One of the best aspects about this series is that it is definitely NOT predictable! Not in the least. You never know where the writers are going to take you.. The character development, story lines, acting, directing, casting and effects are all first rate. Considering that the series has its fair share of killing (although not overly so, and it's certainly not the focus of the show), the series couldn't be called . I also would not call this show necessarily . It does have killing and blood and bodies and body parts, after all there are vampires in it, but even so, it's done in a way that is not offensive or vulgar.)There is comedy, drama, action and suspense.. Despite the blood, death and suspense, the series as a whole is well balanced with comedy and other character's story lines which help keep it from being overly dark. There is a quite a bit of nudity - not raunchy, but tasteful and almost artful. So if you're sensitive to nudity, just be forewarned.. I easily give 5- stars to every season. Another refreshing bonus is that the episode commentary for every season is also worth watching. The actors, directors and writers actually contribute thoughtful and interesting tidbits that add to the episodes and the series.
